Before you start replacing the front coil springs on your 2002 Dodge Dakota, make sure to gather all the necessary tools and materials. Here’s a list to help you prepare:
Before beginning the replacement, ensure your vehicle is parked on a flat surface and that your emergency brake is engaged. Wear safety goggles and gloves to protect against any sharp edges or accidental injuries.
Use a jack to lift the front of your Dakota. Once elevated, secure it with jack stands to ensure stability. Never rely solely on the jack for support.
Using a socket wrench, remove the lug nuts and take off the front wheels. This will give you access to the suspension components.
Locate the stabilizer links connecting the sway bar to the lower control arm. Use your socket set to remove the bolts, allowing for greater mobility in the suspension.
Next, locate the top and bottom bolts of the shock absorbers. Use your socket wrench to remove these bolts. With the shock absorbers unbolted, you will have more room to work on the coil springs.
Now it’s time to use your spring compressor. Attach it securely to the coil spring, ensuring even compression on both sides. Compress the spring until it is loose enough to remove.
With the coil spring compressed, remove the retaining clips from the upper mounts, and carefully slide the old coil spring out of the lower control arm. Take extra caution here, as compressed springs can be dangerous.
Position the new coil spring into place in the lower control arm. Make sure it is seated properly. Once in place, release the tension on the spring compressor slowly, allowing the spring to expand into position.
Reattach the shock absorbers, ensuring all bolts are tightened securely. If you had disconnected the stabilizer links, reconnect them as well.
Once everything is reassembled, place the front wheels back onto the vehicle. Hand-tighten the lug nuts for now, as you will fully tighten them once the vehicle is back on the ground.
Carefully remove the jack stands and lower your Dakota back to the ground using the jack. Once the vehicle is on the ground, use a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to the manufacturer's specifications.
After the installation is complete, take a moment to inspect all components for tightness and ensure everything is in the correct position. It's always a good idea to double-check your work before taking the vehicle for a drive.
